State Bicycle Co launched in 2009 when brothers Mehdi and Reza Farsi wanted to make stylish, well-built bikes affordable. They built a direct-to-consumer model around fixed-gear and multi-gear frames, pulling from thousands of SKUs to offer endless customization. The brand grew fast, but its legacy platform couldn’t support advanced personalization or handle spikes in demand.
Their previous ecommerce solution limited product presentation and checkout features. Customers couldn’t configure bikes online in real time, and site performance suffered as traffic climbed. The team needed a system that could deliver interactive tools, scale reliably, and empower marketing around user data.
Migrating to Shopify Plus unlocked a flexible API-driven store. State Bicycle Co integrated a custom bike-builder app that lets riders pick frames, saddles, tires, and accessories. They added product reviews, related-items recommendations, and an “ask a question” chat feature. The new setup is easy to manage, freeing the team to focus on community events and design collaborations.
Developers used Shopify Plus scripts to tailor checkout flows and discounts for up-sell bundles. They connected Klaviyo for segmented email campaigns, Yotpo for review collection, and Google Analytics to track user behavior. The result is a cohesive stack where every tool shares data, so marketing, support, and fulfillment work in sync.
Within months of launch, State Bicycle Co saw:
These gains came from faster page loads, clear customization options, and data-driven email flows. The team reports that new customers trusts in-site features like live Q&A and reviews drove checkout confidence.
State Bicycle Co proved that a high-flexibility platform plus focused marketing can turn browsing into buying. By giving customers control over design and using data to engage them right after purchase, they built stronger loyalty and higher lifetime value.
