When Patta and Tommy Hilfiger teamed up again to celebrate 90s hip-hop culture, they knew the drop needed more than hype—it needed a digital experience that could match the energy of a record-breaking fashion release. The agencies Ask Phill and Rōnin were invited to build an ecommerce platform that could handle HD videos, animations, and heavy images without slowing shoppers down or risking a crash at the critical moment of launch.
Creating a fast site with rich, high-bandwidth content is a tough balance. Load too little, and the site feels flat; load too much, and performance plummets. For product drops, downtime or sluggish pages kill revenue and brand reputation. The teams identified two main hurdles: delivering a visually engaging front end without sacrificing speed, and building infrastructure that could confidently support sudden spikes in traffic.
The answer was headless. By choosing Shopify’s Hydrogen framework—React-based and commerce-focused—they gained full creative control and minimal overhead. Hydrogen‘s catalog of prebuilt UI components for things like layouts, navigation, carts, and checkout let Ask Phill focus on styling complex animations instead of reinventing standard ecommerce flows. They completed the core build in just two weeks, compared to months on previous headless projects.
Hosting on Shopify Oxygen sealed the deal. With one-click deployments and a global edge network, the site was optimized for rapid scale. Patta and Tommy teams could manage launch day themselves, no agency hand-holding required.
On launch day, the site handled over 15,000 concurrent visitors with zero performance hitches or downtime. In a matter of hours, the entire collection sold out. Brand teams monitored live performance directly in the Shopify analytics dashboard, thanks to Hydrogen and Oxygen feeding data seamlessly back to the backend—no complex custom tracking needed. This headless approach not only delivered a marquee experience but also handed real control to internal teams.
Today, Hydrogen and Oxygen are poised to become the go-to standard for headless commerce builds, and the Patta x Tommy flagship stands as proof that you can have bold visuals and bulletproof speed all in one package.
