LAZRUS Golf started in a modest Idaho garage in early 2017. Founder Colton Draper built the first custom wedge by hand, keen to offer quality golf clubs at a fair price. Word spread quickly, and soon orders flooded in. Early success meant selling in Canada and the UK, but unexpected duties, taxes, and fees at delivery triggered a flood of complaints.
Despite clear website notes about import costs, shoppers felt blindsided when an extra charge popped up at their door. Every other day, customer service was fielding angry messages. Colton recognized that a bad delivery surprise could ruin word-of-mouth efforts in sports retail—and at the same time, chewing up his hours packing and labeling each box.
In 2023, LAZRUS Golf activated Shopify’s Managed Markets feature. At checkout, customers now see all duties, taxes, and shipping fees in their local currency. The result? No more shock at delivery. On the back end, Shopify’s partnerships with global carriers slashed shipping costs from around $140 per order to about $35—and cut delivery times drastically.
Before, international delivery averaged 5–7 business days. After Managed Markets, shipments to Canada can arrive in under 48 hours. A golfer in Toronto once shared he got his order next day and couldn’t believe the speed and simplicity. Colton credits that moment with cementing the tool’s value.
With fees upfront and shipping streamlined, conversion rates climbed 55% in the Eurozone and 41% in the UK. LAZRUS doubled the number of countries served, now shipping to over 50 markets. Best of all, Colton reclaimed hundreds of logistical hours—time he now devotes to marketing and product development.
By removing friction in international orders, LAZRUS Golf delivered a smoother purchase journey and a stronger brand reputation. And as Colton says, “When you nail the customer experience from checkout through delivery, you not only win first sales but earn repeat buyers and referrals.”
