When Nikki Schreiner began sharing simple sewing tips from her home studio, she never imagined she’d turn her hobby into a six-figure venture. Over seven years, this Army wife and homeschool mom learned to publish blog posts, launch YouTube tutorials, and sell digital PDF patterns while working about 20 hours a week. Today, her business Pin Cut Sew Studio is proof that targeted content and a few smart revenue streams can add real income without giving up family time.
In the early 2000s, Nikki wrote about home life and occasionally mentioned sewing. It wasn’t until she tried multi-level marketing and realized she preferred teaching and creating that she refocused on sewing. She started free camps and classes, then launched a blog and a YouTube channel with her husband’s encouragement. Steady tutorial content laid the groundwork for an engaged audience.
Nikki added video to her strategy when she noticed how much viewers liked seeing her personality. Her YouTube channel grew to 106,000 subscribers and 5 million views, and her website now draws over 400,000 visits each year. Alongside this, she cultivated an email list of more than 10,000 enthusiasts by offering free project downloads in exchange for sign-ups.
In 2019 Nikki tested printable PDF versions of her tutorials and opened an Etsy shop. She made her first sale immediately and soon sold thousands of patterns. Today, pattern sales bring in between $6,000 and $9,000 each summer, doubling or tripling in the holiday season. YouTube ad revenue adds about $2,000 per month, rising to $4,000 in Q4, while blog ads contribute around $500 monthly.
Balancing teaching her teens at home, moving with the Army, and running a business meant learning to use small pockets of time. Nikki drafted blog posts while waiting in carpool lanes, and edited video during nap times. By fitting work into life instead of disrupting it, she kept her project sustainable.
Key moments include the decision to sell patterns, the push to take video seriously, and building an email list early. Each tweak doubled her revenue year over year, leading to her first $100,000+ year in 2024. Along the way, she turned down most sponsorships and focused on content that reflected her values.
