Chiikawa first appeared as a simple comic strip on X in 2017 by illustrator Nagano. With its charming characters and a mix of lighthearted moments and subtle depth, the series quickly gained a devoted following. In April 2022, the anime adaptation on "Mezamashi TV" catapulted the franchise into wider domestic and international fame. Fans clamored for merchandise, so Gray Parker Service Co., Ltd. launched Chiikawa Market in 2020 as the official online store. It sold everything from plush toys to stationery.
Rapid demand proved brutal for the initial platform. Every new product release brought massive traffic spikes that overwhelmed servers. On launch days, the site would go down within minutes, leaving fans locked out. Operations staff couldn’t even access the dashboard to verify orders or inventory. Hundreds of complaints flooded social media each time. The team faced mounting pressure and realized the existing setup was not built to handle their growing popularity.
In early 2022, Chiikawa Market’s leadership evaluated options. They needed guaranteed uptime, built-in security assurance, and seamless integration with order management and WMS. Shopify Plus emerged as the clear choice given its track record in entertainment e-commerce and its capacity to process thousands of checkouts per minute. Technical support from Commerce Media Inc. reassured the team that they could handle peak loads without hiccups.
Before a full switch, the team ran a trial store for another character line. They confirmed that the Shopify admin was more intuitive and that data surfaced in real time. Once confident, they migrated Chiikawa Market in mid-2022. The transition included setting up analytics dashboards, tagging and metafields for products, and testing the Shop Pay express checkout. A few minor sync issues with the legacy WMS were ironed out over a weekend.
Since the launch on Shopify Plus, Chiikawa Market has not experienced a single server downtime during product releases. The store can now handle over 3,000 checkouts per minute without lag. Over the three years following the migration, gross merchandise value grew more than fivefold with an annual average rate of 140%. Shop Pay accounts for roughly 40% of transactions, cutting checkout time in half for returning customers.
Real-time analytics on a unified dashboard has sharpened demand forecasting. Product teams analyze past performance to predict sell-out risk and schedule additional production weeks in advance. By leveraging tags and metafields, the merchandising process is faster and less error-prone, reducing manual workload by an estimated 30%. Integrating with LINE through the official account has also enabled targeted CRM campaigns that drive repeat purchases.
With a solid foundation, the store plans to ramp up international sales by adding local payment methods and optimizing logistics. The team is exploring AI-driven demand forecasting tools that tap into generative models and the Shopify app ecosystem. Next up is a streamlined cross-border checkout that speaks four languages and auto-calculates local duties, aiming to win fans around the globe.
