Ship It Appliances began in 2011 on eBay, selling cookware and kitchen essentials from a modest warehouse in Mansfield, England. Over time, the family business evolved into one of the UK’s largest independent cooker hood retailers and expanded across multiple categories. Yet behind this success, the brand grappled with performance bottlenecks, slow page speeds, and a heavy reliance on developers to manage updates and customizations.
After outgrowing its Advansys and WooCommerce setups, Managing Director Nick Eaton sought a platform that combined reliability, scalability, and ease of use. Shopify and Magento were considered but dismissed: Magento felt like “out of the frying pan, into the fire” while Shopify capped growth around the $10 million mark. The decision landed on BigCommerce for its enterprise architecture and robust, open roadmap.
5874 Commerce, an Elite BigCommerce partner, orchestrated a smooth migration from WooCommerce, cleansing broken data and integrating the company’s tech stack around Linnworks. With 100% API connectivity between Linnworks and BigCommerce, Ship It Appliances gained full control over data flows, order management, and fulfillment processes.
By adding FreshClick for faceted site search, ShipperHQ for dynamic shipping rates, and Signifyd for zero-liability fraud prevention, the team delivered a seamless customer experience. The automated warehouse system with scanners improved book-out processes and boosted productivity on the floor. Meanwhile, marketing teams leveraged customer groups and price lists to self-serve B2B orders online, freeing up valuable human resources.
In 2021, an acquisition broadened the group’s portfolio, prompting a full omnichannel push onto eBay, Amazon, OnBuy, B&Q, Facebook, and Instagram. BigCommerce’s flexible APIs made each marketplace integration straightforward, maintaining a single source of truth in Linnworks.
Comparing November 2020 to November 2019, Ship It Appliances has realized a 220% increase in revenue, 88% growth in users, and an 8% uplift in average order value. The streamlined back-end automation and end-to-end visibility have transformed warehouse productivity and customer satisfaction alike.
Looking ahead, the company plans a full site redesign driven by UX data, expanded SEO tactics within BigCommerce, and new channel launches on DIY.com and ManoMano. With the foundations in place, Ship It Appliances is primed to scale even further without the pain points of older platforms.
