In late 2019, graphic designer Katya Varbanova spotted a shift on Instagram: carousel graphics and educational slides ruled the feed. She knew most small business owners lacked the design chops to replicate that look. Already working weekends on social-media coaching, she decided to test the market with a pack of 100 editable Canva templates.
Rather than guess, Katya asked her audience if theyβd pay for a template bundle. Within 24 hours, 100 people said yes. She set up a simple checkout page and raised $7,647 in pre-sales. A week later, that number jumped to $23,362 and by day 21 she had 1,300 sales, all without paid ads.
With organic sales flowing, Katya set aside $1,000 for Facebook ads. The campaign brought in $6,000 more, proving there was untapped demand. She and her fiancΓ© Jamie built a lightweight site on WordPress, integrated Stripe, and launched Viral Content Templates.
Many early buyers asked to share the templates with their followers. Katya set up an affiliate program, paying a commission on each sale. Affiliates amplified her reach and drove recurring sales at no upfront cost.
Seeing repeat customers, Katya rolled out Viral Content Club: a $57/month or $499/year subscription giving members new templates each month and access to a private community. In 13 months it hit 1,500 members and generated $688,957.
Since launch, Viral Content Templates has grossed $1.4M. Today Katya works about 10 hours a week. A lean team of a designer, finance manager, and freelance support handle operations. The business now runs on predictable recurring revenue with minimal overhead.
This story shows how a simple validation, smart ad spend, and a subscription model can turn a design skill into a six-figure passive revenue stream.
