In 2016, Polysleep launched a fresh take on selling premium, Canadian-made mattresses direct to customers. They focused on high-quality foam layers packed into a compact box. To stand out against established names with deep pockets, they needed an online solution offering freedom, speed, and scalability right away.
Three goals defined their path: launch without major upfront costs, iterate faster than legacy mattress brands, and scale revenue locally before testing new markets. Traditional e-commerce setups often mean waiting on developers for every tweak. Polysleep's lean team wanted control and speed in days, not weeks.
Choosing Shopify Plus let them spin up a custom storefront almost overnight. They tapped into the built-in 3D model viewer to simulate a hands-on product experience online, giving shoppers the ability to examine mattress layers, pinch and zoom like in a showroom. This raised engagement and sped decision times. To fuel traffic, they leveraged the native blogging engine to share comparisons, performance tests, and customer reviews. For email, Klaviyo flows guided new subscribers through a brief educational series before delivering targeted offers that nudged them to checkout.
They also used a store locator app to turn digital visits into in-person demos. When shoppers typed queries like ‘best mattress in Montreal,’ Polysleep appeared across local search, bringing 10X more traffic than legacy competitors combined.
Once domestic sales soared, Polysleep applied Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app and international sales tools to move into the US market in a matter of weeks. They adjusted language, pricing, and shipping settings, then watched new orders roll in without missing a beat.
Within five years, Polysleep's annual revenue topped $10 million. Since 2020, net revenue jumped 3X, thanks partly to a 900% increase in organic traffic. All of this was driven by a team of fewer than fifteen people, proving that small groups can deliver large outcomes when the right tools are in place.
Polysleep’s story shows how a lean team can disrupt a crowded market by picking a scalable commerce platform and using built-in features creatively. Through fast launches, engaging content, targeted email, and simple international tools, they outpaced legacy competitors and continue to scale.
